the seamless ruang bayang house in bandung: project by rakta studio

the ruang bayang (rr house) is another residential project by rakta studio located in the center of bandung, the capital city of west java indonesia. the house main idea was to create a sequential progression from the public to private zones by using a small zen-like courtyard and vertical circulation as the divider between the two. another essential part to highlight prior to the design process is also to adjust the volumetric scales of the public area and private zone inward. not to forget ensuring dynamic interactions with the exterior.

taking a closer look at the interior, the house features a double-height inner court with an abundant skylight from the above. it creates an interaction between the users, natural light, and architectural elements. besides, the sun makes a beautiful shadow or what is called “bayang” in bahasa indonesia, towards the wall beneath them. here, the light will continuously change the shadows’ shape and direction following the sun’s dynamic movement each day.
