the invisible boundary from the east : featuring junya ishigami
junya ishigami has become one the most innovative voices in the architecture world because of his passion in contemporary design. what sets him apart is his constant embracing of the new when it comes to inventing a project. he is deemed one of the most experimental architects, always dreaming of creating light, cloud-like structure that is random like nature. it is through this vision that he has been able to achieve the unachievable.
before ishigami established his own practice, he was an architect in a local architecture firm, sanaa. at the age 25, ishigami decided to grow his own architectural firm under the name of junya. ishigami+associates. he received an award as the youngest ever recipient of the architectural institute of japan prize for the kanagawa institute of technology kait workshop in 2009.
ishigami’s hometown might be the start of his orientation towards contemporary design. located in the south of tokyo, kanagawa perfecture is the pioneer of modernism amongst all other cities in japan. thus, traditional wooden interior and a tea room might not be on ishigami’s list when it comes to design.
