helvetica — falling in love all over again
developed by eduard hoffmann and max medienger, helvetica, turns out to be the one and only famous typeface whose existence is crucial in the design world — many call it the designers’ font. amongst one of the most popular fonts used till this day, notable global brands such as american airlines, microsoft, toyota, mitsubishi, bmw, jeep, and panasonic, to name a few, use helvetica. unlike the other, helvetica is like water that flows over time: it is neutral, easy to read, even its different weights and styles effectively embody almost every message or meaning. helvetica is modern and timeless, and the plain form is what makes the font exists in the past, present and future. hoffmann knew that designing a great typeface was not only about the beauty and logical construction of each individual character, but rather the composition. he believed that each character has to fit together with other characters to form the perfect combination of words. when developing helvetica, he used the word “hamburger” in different sizes, as written in one of the pages inside story of a typeface: helvetica forever, a book that hoffmann and miedinger wrote together and published on november 27th 1957. since then, he knew that his “hamburger” could be…
