estudio cavernas empowering people through construction
working on a project in conflict areas where marginalized communities live is such an exceptional, noble contribution an architect could have. here, the role does not speak only about building and constructing, but it also creates a bridge or a tool to uplift the people’s skill and confidence. first, though, we have to understand their way of living, culture, backgrounds, problems, and concerns.
this undertaking never sounds easy. yet, for juan and yago cuevas of estudio cavernas, they noticed one similar growing passion for empowering the community in conflict areas. it has then led them to move from living in the urban context to mae sot, thailand.
there, the story began from making an impact and creating everlasting architecture for the displaced people. into architecture as a tool to connect with the environment, the challenges, the local entities: a billion collaborations.
finding the desire
the urban setting has forced duran to focus on the use of parametric tools, while the idea of generating nature-inspired structures is what captivates them. participating in several big-scale projects raised doubts about the efficiency of the work they were involved in prior to moving to thailand.
