british architect mark the discovery building that commemorates the discovery of antarctica in 1820
ever wonder who lives in the southernmost part of the earth other than penguins and polar bears? seeing national geographic channel exposed nothing but the mammals and heavy snows who occupy the island.
perhaps nobody resident the island, since it is probably not a good idea to live in antarctica or to develop a wide range of architecture on the continent. no commercial industries, no permanent residents, just far far away from the normal life other continents have. unless if you truly seek a hidden place for isolation from the crowded cities. would antarctica be a bad idea? nobody knows….
however, the land is open wide for many possibilities, such as the home of the british antarctic survey’s research station and its discovery building which is currently under construction.
under the collaboration of london based hugh broughton architects and ramboll with norr and turner & townsend, the operation center is being built at the rothera research station on adelaide island, which popularily known as the base of british research in antarctica, that at the same time acts as the capital of the british antarctic territory on the continent.
