many countries in asia, especially the eastern countries, have undergone rapid retail development. design trends have also dynamically changed. one is to become a trend-spotter as demanded by millenials and gen z. second, to host what it means by a new kind of retail experience, unlike decades ago: timeless, curated, and comfortable.

as of today, people do not come to a retail store only for shopping, but to “discover” and “experience”. here we listed some of the best retail design in east asian countries that makes a predominant trend in 2021 and probably to a decade after.

harlan + holden store seoul by david chipperfield architects

harlan + holden is a clothing retailer with 20 stores across south korea, the philippines, and indonesia. the stores’ interior is grooved with terracotta panels and neutral tones that resemble tranquility. the brand rejects the idea of fast fashion and instead focuses on comfortable and timeless pieces. this is why everything seems to be seamlessly coherent: the design, the products, and the brand’s philosophy.
